Mwaka 1976, nilipata shahada ya B.A. katika Chuo Kikuu cha Dar es Salaam. Nilipongezwa kwa kumaliza masomo. Mimi sikuishia hapo. Niliendelea na masomo, hapo hapo Chuo Kikuu cha Dar es Salaam, nikapata shahada ya M.A. mwaka 1978. Nilipongezwa kwa kumaliza masomo.
Miaka michache baadaye, nilienda Marekani, Chuo Kikuu cha Wisconsin-Madison. Nilisoma nikapata shahada nyingine ya M.A. mwaka 1982. Sikumaliza masomo. Niliendelea nikapata shahada ya Ph.D. mwaka 1986. Kwa mtazamo wa jamii yetu, nilimaliza masomo. Kwani baada ya shahada ya udaktari, kuna nini zaidi?
Mimi sikuona kama nimemaliza masomo. Niliona nimepata motisha tu ya kusoma na kujielimisha. Jambo la msingi nililojifunza ni kwamba elimu ni bahari pana isiyo na mwisho, na yale niliyosomea ni tone dogo sana. Ninaamini kuwa elimu ya kweli ni kutambua hilo, na kujitambua ulivyo mjinga, na utambuzi huo uwe ni chachu ya kukufanya ukazane kujielimisha maisha yako yote. Uuone ujinga kama adui anayekunyemelea na kukufukuza maisha yote. Kusaka elimu ndio mbio za kujinusuru.
Ndivyo ninavyofanya katika maisha yangu. Kwa kutambua mapungufu yangu, ninatafuta elimu muda wote, kwa utafiti, kununua vitabu, na kusoma kwa bidii.
Mwalimu Nyerere alituongoza kwenye njia hiyo. Alisisitiza kuwa elimu haina mwisho. Na huu ndio ukweli.
Na hapo sijaongelea elimu ambayo inapatikana nje ya shule. Sijaongelea elimu ya kijijini. Sijaongelea elimu inayopatikana kwa wavuvi, wafugaji, wawindaji, wacheza ngoma, wavuta mkokoteni, polisi, wachanganya zege, wabeba boksi, kondakta wa dala dala, na mama ntilie. Kila mmoja ana jambo la kunifundisha, na kila mmoja ana jambo la kukufundisha. Hayo nimeyagusia katika kitabu cha CHANGAMOTO.

Kweli kabisa elimu haina mwisho!

Mimi, baada ya kuikwaa hiyo PhD nimekuwa nikihangaika na utafiti vijijini na sehemu zinginezo. Nimezunguka Ukerewe, Ukara, Bariadi, Magu, Shinyanga, Mbulu, Lushoto, Zanzibar, achilia mbali pwani ya Kenya, kuanzia Mombasa hadi Lamu.
Katika mizunguko hii, nimekuwa nikipata elimu ya hali ya juu kutoka kwa wazee na watu wengine. Hao ni watalaam. Wananifunisha mengi sana, ambayo hayako maktabani, wala katika shule yoyote.
Kwa mfano, katika utafiti Zanzibar, nimefunindishwa na Ustaadh Gora Haji Gora. Yeye hakusoma hizi shule tunazozipigia debe. Alisoma madrassa ya kiIslam, akaanza shughuli mbali mbali, hasa uvuvi.
Mzee huyu ni bingwa kwa taaluma mbali mbali za lugha na tungo za kiSwahili kiasi kwamba wasomi ndio wanaenda kuponea kwake. Na wazee wa namna hii nimekutana nao pwani ya Kenya. Wasomi maarufu duniani wamefundishwa na wazee hao wa mwambao wa Kenya, na upande wa kwetu.
Watafiti wengi utawakuta huko vijijini, na wanaishia kuandika vitabu maarufu. Na umaarufu wanaupata wao, kumbe chimbuko ni hao wazee wa vijijini.
Kweli profesa nakubalina nawe kuwa elimu haina mwisho kwasababau kama binadamu hatuwezi kujua yote, lakini twatakiwa kufanya juhudi ya kuyajua yale yanayostahili kujulikana na huwezi kuyapata mpaka kusoma.
Kuna kikatuni kilionyeshwa jamaa aliyekuwa akitafuta elimu, alisoma wee, kila akiajiriwa anakuta kuna waliomzidi, kwahiyo huenda kusoma ili awafikie, akirudi kuna wa zaidi yake, akasoma mpaka akaoan hakuna aliye zaidi yake, akaenda kuomba kazi mahala.
'Mzee kweli umesoma una kila kitu kinachohitajika lakini `umri wako' mzee, twahitaji watuu wasiozidi miaka 35, wewe unakimbilia 50...nenda kaam tutakuhitaji tutakuita ...

FACTS:
Parastatals is a manifestation of increasing demands for personnel with higher education background from both the public and private sectors.
Following the establishment of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education in November, 1990 there has been further developments in the higher education sector whereby by 1990:
(i) There were only two public Universities, the University of Dar es Salaam with Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences as its constituent College and the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, and
(ii) There was only one Technical School, the Dar es Salaam Technical College,

Kwanza, kabla sijatua kwenye hoja, napenda kusema laiti ungeonyesha heshima kwa lugha yetu kwa kuiandika bila kuiingizia maneno ya ki-Ingereza. Mtu asiyeiheshimu lugha yake ana matatizo, kwani lugha ndio kitambulisho cha jamii husika, utu wake na hadhi yake. Kutoisheshimu lugha yako ni madharau kwako na kwa jamii yako.
Lakini ngoja nirudi kwenye hoja. Ungekuwa unafahamu kweli sera za Nyerere kuhusu elimu, ungeona kuwa aliongelea mengi, kuanzia elimu ya msingi hadi elimu ya vyuo vikuu, elimu ya watu wazima, na kisomo chenye manufaa. Ungefahamu kuwa alisema elimu haina mwisho.
Nyerere aliandika sana kuhusu elimu. Na kuna kitabu kimechapishwa Dar es Salaam na E&D Publishers kiitwacho "Nyerere on Education," ambacho kimekusanya maandishi na hotuba za Mwalimu kuhusu suala hilo. Ungekuwa mtu makini ungezingatia hayo.
Katika "Elimu ya Kujitegemea," Mwalimu amefafanua vizuri sana misingi ya elimu aliyotaka tujenge, akitofautisha na elimu ya kikoloni. Mwalimu alisisitiza mshikamano baina ya nadharia na vitendo. Huu ni msingi mkubwa katika fikra za Mwalimu katika suala la elimu.
Kwa taarifa yako, wataalam wa masuala ya elimu, kuanzia Tanzania hadi duniani kote wanauenzi mchango wa Mwalimu katika uwanja huo. Tembea kwenye vyuo vikuu, utaona hivyo. Makala na vitabu vinachapishwa muda wote vinavyomnukuu Mwalimu.
Kuhusu ujenzi wa vyuo vikuu, kumbuka kwamba tulipopata Uhuru, hatukuwa na chuo kikuu nchini. Vyuo hivi ulivyovitaja ni juhudi ya Mwalimu Nyerere, na alikuwa anavijali sana na aliwahamasisha wale wanaohitimu kwenye vyuo hivyo wakumbuke wajibu wao kwa jamii. Kuna hotuba ambamo alielezea chuo kikuu kuwa ni "kijiji aghali" kwa nchi yetu. Kwa hivi, wasomi watambue wajibu wao kwa jamii, na alikumbushia pia wajibu wa wale wanaoenda kusomeshwa nje. Kauli zako kuhusu suala la Mwalimu na elimu ya juu ni pumba kavu.
Napenda nirudi nilipoanzia. Mimi siwezi kudai kuwa yale niliyosema kwa Mjengwa, au ninayosema sasa, au wakati wowote mwingine, kwamba sio pumba. Naamini kuwa kila mtu ni mbumbumbu kwa namna nyingi, na ndio maana mimi ni mtafuta elimu muda wote.
Makala ya ukurasa wangu huu, "Huwezi Kumaliza Masomo" ni ushahidi wa mtazamo wangu huo. Nimeufafanua vizuri katika kitabu cha CHANGAMOTO. Na hii ndio falsafa ya Mwalimu Nyerere, kwa taarifa yako, kwamba elimu haina mwisho. Kwa hivi, tuendelee kuelimishana.

Tulipopata Uhuru, mwaka 1961, nchini mwetu kilichokuwepo ni kiungo cha Chuo Kikuu cha London. Kiungo hiki mwaka 1963 kilifanywa kuwa chuo kishiriki cha Chuo Kikuu cha Afrika Mashariki. Chuo kikuu chetu kilianzishwa au niseme kilizaliwa mwaka 1970, kwa mujibu wa sheria husika ya mwaka ule. Hiki ndicho chuo kikuu chetu cha kwanza.
